About the Society

The History

of the Society

Kurt Berger's memories of the last 50 years

The Society was founded in 1915 as the Chiswick Allotment Holders’ Association and changed its name in 1945 to the Chiswick Horticultural Society. In 1999, the name was extended to the Chiswick Horticultural Society, Allotments and Gardeners’ Club. In January 2006, the Society became a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee with the name Chiswick Horticultural and Allotments Society.

The values of the Society are:

*         a determination to grow and enjoy first class flowers, fruit and vegetables;

*         a conviction that gardeners should care for nature and the environment;

*         a desire to share knowledge and nurture horticultural skills;

*         a commitment to reduce barriers and make gardening more accessible;

*         a belief that gardening and floral art are therapeutic and can improve the quality of life;

*         an understanding that a shared interest in gardening can help foster a friendly community spirit.
