The Kitchen Garden

The Project

The one and a half acre kitchen garden at Chiswick House is not part of the original 18th century grounds. Little of the original layout remains, save the gates and parts of the brick walls that date back to their ownership by Sir Stephen Fox, Paymaster General and boss to Samuel Pepys, who bought the adjoining Moreton Hall in 1663. The Duke of Devonshire acquired the Hall and grounds in 1812 and added them to the existing Chiswick House grounds.

The Chiswick Horticultural Society was given permission to clear weeds and debris and start creating an educational area. In February 2005 local schoolchildren and volunteers began work. After 600 visits by children from 17 local schools and three public open days, part of the Kitchen Garden has been transformed in to a highly productive organic community garden.

Because of the great success of this project, the Chiswick House Kitchen Garden Association was formed in late 2005 to continue with the regeneration of this historic garden for the benefit of the community.
